CPS Financial Literacy Outreach (CPS FLO)
Chicago Public Schools Financial Literacy Outreach (CPS FLO) is a personal finance program for minority-dominant, low-income, and limited education Chicago neighborhoods. In targeting Education and Economic Stability social determinants of health, we intend to improve health outcomes for these vulnerable populations. We are sponsored by the Northwestern Economics Department and organized by Economics undergraduate students.
Economics students lead 30-60 minute biweekly Zoom sessions with our partnered high schools. Sessions are divided equally between presenting material and hosting Kahoot questions. Upperclassmen are invited to train a small team of these students for their presentations through regular prep meetings prior to the biweekly session. All positions provide students with opportunities for growth in leadership, productive client interactions, and application of previous course material, furthering students' academic and professional skills.
CPS FLO hosts an end-of-year field day on Northwestern’s campus to introduce interested high school students to college life. Events include:
- Northwestern Overview
- Tour of Northwestern’s campus
- Lunch (with catering from local businesses)
- Mini-lecture from Northwestern faculty
- Panel discussion with Northwestern students to discuss college applications, academics, and social strategies
General membership is open to all Economics undergraduates at Northwestern. Executive Board elections occur annually each fall.
