Susan Bies Lecture 2024

On April 25, 2024, the Department of Economics hosted Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the speaker for the annual Susan Bies Lecture on Economics and Public Policy

In the lecture, "Gita Gopinath: a Conversation with Lawrence Christiano," Dr. Gopinath spoke with Department of Economics Professor Lawrence Christiano about challenges and opportunities in the world economy as well as her experiences working at the IMF.

Earlier in the day, a small group of undergraduate students and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Mark Witte, had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Gopinath and ask questions about her life and experiences.

The Susan Bies Lecture on Economics and Public Policy was launched in 2008 in honor of Northwestern alumna Susan Schmidt Bies. Bies, who earned her doctorate in economics from Northwestern University in 1972, served in various capacities during a long career, including on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 2001 until 2007. The lecture alternates between microeconomic and macroeconomic topics.
