Northwestern has now completed its academic year, culminating with our June graduation ceremonies. The campus is quiet, with students and faculty scattered around the world. I’m writing to update you on developments of the past six months in the Department of Economics.
The department had a busy recruiting year, as we often do. Garima Sharma (Ph.D. MIT) spent last year at Princeton as a post-doc and will join us this summer as an Assistant Professor. Kunal Sangani (Ph.D. Harvard) will spend next year as a post-doc at Stanford before joining us in the summer of 2025. Garima is a development economist who studies labor markets, and Kunal is a macroeconomist. Senior recruiting is ongoing, and I hope to have some positive news to report in my next letter.
Kunal Sangani received his Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and will work as a post-doc at Stanford University during the 2024-25 academic year before joining Northwestern as a faculty member in the Department of Economics in summer 2025.

In winter quarter, the department hosted a lecture in honor of former faculty member and Nobel laureate Dale Mortensen.
This spring, Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, was on campus to speak at the Susan Bies Lecture on Economics and Public Policy.
Congratulations to the class of 2024! This year we celebrated with a senior awards ceremony including remarks from Professors Mark Witte, Rob Porter, James Hornsten, and Robert Coen.
Our undergraduate students have accomplished a great deal this year, including visiting the St. Louis Fed, hosting the largest Northwestern Economics Tournament to date, and making waves in the world of entrepreneurship.
We wish all of our graduate students success as they continue their teaching and research pursuits at fine institutions and firms throughout the world.
Our department is looking forward to welcoming our incoming class to the Ph.D. program in the fall!
