Undergraduate Student Groups
Our student groups planned more events this year than we have ever seen before.
Chicago Public Schools Financial Literacy Outreach continued their programming in the 2023-24 academic year, leading 30-60 minute biweekly Zoom sessions with their partnered high schools. This year, they focused their programs on targeting Education and Economic Stability social determinants of health, with the intention of improving health outcomes for these vulnerable populations.
NET held its seventh annual tournament from April 6-7, 2024, hosting 20 in-person and 32 virtual teams from high schools throughout the United States and internationally. Teams tackled a challenging exam in the Power Round and sparred against each other in the nail-biting Econ Bowl. They demonstrated an impressive wealth of economics knowledge, from current events to complex game theory concepts. Additionally, Professors Mark Witte and Piotr Dworczak presented engaging lectures in their respective research fields, providing participants with a taste of Northwestern economics.
The Undergraduate Economic Society hosted a number of events for students in the 2023-24 academic year, including an alumni panel focused on internships in finance, a winter speaker event "The Past, Present, and Future of Behavioral Science" featuring Economics Professor Eric Schulz, and co-hosting a Feed Your Mind lunch featuring Professor Eric Auerbach.
Womxn in Economics hosted a full year of programming in the 2023-24 academic year. Their events ranged from visits to Kellogg MBA classes taught by Professor Lauren Eskreis-Winkler, a faculty speaker series featuring female Kellogg faculty, study hall and study buddy programs, and information sessions for underclassmen on how to select economics elective classes.
Womxn in Economics Goes to the St. Louis Fed
In April 2024, the President and Vice President of Womxn in Economics, Constanza Navarro and Margot Amouyal, respectively, attended the St. Louis Fed Women in Economics conference. Their travel and expenses were covered by the Department through the generosity of our donors. Read about their experience below:
"In April, we had the unique opportunity to attend the Women in Economics Symposium at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, supported by Northwestern. At least 50 women from universities across the nation attended the conference, and it was fun to meet the other attendees and hear about their reasons for studying economics. We also heard from many fascinating speakers, many of whom were economists or research associates at the Federal Reserve Bank. My favorite talk was by Federal Reserve Board Governor Adriana Kugler. She spoke about how ideas for economic research can emerge from real-life experiences and observations." - Margot Amouyal
