Undergraduate Fall Events
Welcome Back Bonfire
On October 9, the Department of Economics hosted a bonfire on the campus Lakefill to welcome back undergraduate Economics majors and minors as well as to introduce prospective Economics students to members of the department. Students and Economics faculty socialized over s'mores and warmed up around the campfire for an exciting year ahead.
Getting a PhD in Economics
On October 30, Department of Economics Professors Vivek Bhattacharya and Eric Auerbach hosted an informational evening for undergraduates on Getting a PhD in Economics. Students asked questions about paths toward Economics graduate study and Professors Bhattacharya and Auerbach shared their insights on the application and recruitment process for graduate programs as well as their own experiences from when they were graduate students.
Transfer Student Welcome
On November 7, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Mark Witte, and First-Year Student Advisor, Professor Jim Hornsten hosted an evening to welcome new undergraduate transfer students who are interested in majoring or minoring in Economics. The transfer students met with current undergraduates, including former transfer students, to learn about the experience of undergraduate Economics at Northwestern.
Undergraduate Student Organizations
Womxn in Economics (WiE)
- WiE began the new academic year with a fall kickoff in October, allowing students to meet with the executive board as well as learn about the core economics major courses first-hand from their peers. Later in October, the organization received an InclusionNU Grant to support their programming efforts. In November, the group hosted drop-in hours where students could ask upperclassmen for guidance on choosing electives that may be right for them before winter registration. In December, the group brought 20 members of their organization to the 2024 Economic Outlook Conference hosted by the Chicago Fed.
Northwestern Economics Tournament (NET)
- The team behind NET has been actively working to plan their 2025 tournament which is scheduled to take place on Northwestern’s campus and online April 5-6, 2025. The organization had a very robust recruiting effort this year, adding many new members which will allow the group to offer their tournament to even more schools in 2025.
Chicago Public Schools Financial Literacy Outreach (CPS FLO)
- This fall, CPS FLO has grown its executive board, allowing the organization to offer even more programming on financial literacy to Chicago Public Schools and community organizations. The group plans to continue its efforts in winter quarter, working with several schools in the Chicagoland area.
