Honoring Joel Horowitz

Horowitz and colleagues

After 25 years as a Professor of Economics at Northwestern and a storied career that brought him from a Ph.D. in Physics to work at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of Iowa, Professor Joel Horowitz retired from the Department of Economics at the conclusion of the 2025–26 academic year.

Ivan CanaySince joining the faculty in 2001 as the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Economics, Horowitz has been a leading figure in econometrics, producing influential research on semiparametric and nonparametric methods, bootstrap inference, and statistical estimation under weak assumptions. His work has shaped modern empirical economics and earned him recognition as a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Statistical Association, and the International Statistical Institute.

Beyond his research contributions, Horowitz has been a dedicated mentor to generations of graduate students and junior scholars, helping to establish Northwestern as a global center for econometrics. His leadership as co-editor of Econometrica and Econometric Theory, along with his collaborative approach to scholarship, has left a lasting mark on the profession.

In spring of 2025, the Center for Econometrics organized a conference Celebrating Joel Horowitz's Contributions to Econometrics, organized by Profs. Ivan Canay and Federico Bugni.

The department celebrates his remarkable career and extends its deepest gratitude for his many years of service, scholarship, and mentorship. We are happy to continue to see Prof. Horowitz around the halls of the Kellog Global Hub in his new role as a Professor Emeritus of Economics.
