"On the Brink: A Story of History, Hope and Determination" film screening and panel discussion
"On the Brink: A Story of History, Hope and Determination" film screening and discussion with Kimberley Rudd '88, communications and non-profit management professional and Michelle Bibbs '86 & '88, Associate Senior Consultant with The Alford Group was an insightful conversation on October 3, 2019.
We are grateful to Producer and Co-director Jeffrey D. Shulman (WCAS ’01, KSM ’04, KSM ’06), Professor of Marketing at the University of Washington Foster School of Business, for moderating an important discussion which included:
- The Seattle story paralleled what is happening throughout Chicago, notably Bronzeville and Kenwood. It was discussed how the film was a cautionary tale as the Obama Presidential Center has potential to transform and impact the communities in South Chicago.
- Concrete action steps we can all do to get involved in solutions to the complex problem of gentrification:
- Learn more about the communities and their history, specifically in Chicago: visit the “Undesign the Redline” exhibit that was in Evanston, and is now in Chicago
- Share: what you learn with your network
- Shop: patronize the city’s Black and Latinx businesses and be a part of their cultural resilience
